Before Your Surgery

At your pre-operative appointment, Dr. Graw will walk you through your surgical plan in detail, answer any remaining questions, and measure you for your post-operative compression garment. Please review your procedure consent form before this visit and come prepared with any questions you'd like to discuss.

Your aftercare instructions and prescription medications will be provided at this appointment.

There are several important steps to take in the weeks leading up to your procedure, such as:

  • Stop smoking, vaping, or using any nicotine or cannabis products at least 4 weeks before surgery and 4 weeks post-surgery. The act of smoking significantly impairs healing and increases the risk of complications, including delayed wound healing and infection. Secondhand smoke should be avoided as well.
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements — including aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and vitamin E — for at least 2 weeks prior, unless otherwise directed by Dr. Graw.
  • Stay well-hydrated and maintain a protein-rich diet in the weeks before your procedure to support healing.
  • Complete any required pre-operative lab work or medical clearances at least 7 days before surgery.

To make your recovery as comfortable as possible, prepare your home in advance. Set up a restful recovery area on a lower floor if possible, stock up on easy-to-prepare foods, and arrange for someone to stay with you the first night following surgery.

The Day of Your Surgery

On the morning of your procedure, shower with regular soap and water. Do not apply deodorant, lotion, perfume, or makeup afterward. Leave valuables at home and remove all body piercings before arriving. You must have a confirmed designated driver, as you will not be permitted to undergo surgery without one. A rideshare or taxi is not sufficient.

Upon arrival, you will meet the anesthesiologist and Dr. Graw's surgical team. Throughout your procedure, Dr. Graw remains focused entirely on achieving the refined, elegant results she is known for. Your family will be updated on your status, and Dr. Graw will speak with them personally when your procedure is complete.

After Your Surgery

Following your abdominoplasty or liposuction, you will wear a compression garment as directed. This is an essential part of reducing swelling and supporting your results. If surgical drains have been placed, you will receive clear instructions on how to empty and record output. In general, drains remain in place until output measures less than 30mL over two consecutive days.

Discomfort is normal in the early days of recovery. Dr. Graw will prescribe pain medication to keep you comfortable. Take it as directed, and do not wait until pain becomes severe to take your next dose. If your prescription contains acetaminophen, do not exceed 3,500mg per day. Narcotic medications may cause constipation; drinking at least 64 oz. of water daily and adding fiber or a stool softener can help.

For a smooth recovery, keep the following in mind:

  • Avoid strenuous activity, lifting, and exercise until Dr. Graw clears you to resume.
  • Rest with your upper body slightly elevated and your knees bent to reduce tension on your abdominal incisions.
  • Do not drive or make important decisions while taking narcotic pain medication.
  • Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments so Dr. Graw can monitor your healing and progress.

Most patients begin to see meaningful improvement within a few weeks, with final results continuing to refine over several months as swelling fully subsides.

Can I eat or drink before my surgery?

You will be given specific instructions about fasting at your pre-operative appointment — in most cases, you will need to stop eating and drinking after midnight the night before surgery. Following these guidelines exactly is essential for your safety under anesthesia.

When can I shower after my procedure?

Most patients are cleared to shower within 48–72 hours following surgery, though you should avoid soaking the incision sites until Dr. Graw confirms they are fully healed. She will provide specific wound care instructions at your pre-operative appointment.

How long will I need to wear my compression garment?

Most patients wear their compression garment continuously for the first 4–6 weeks, removing it only to shower. Dr. Graw will advise you on the exact duration based on your individual procedure and healing progress.

When can I return to work?

Most patients with desk jobs are able to return to work within 2–3 weeks, while those with physically demanding jobs may need 4–6 weeks before resuming full duties. Dr. Graw will provide personalized guidance based on the scope of your procedure.

Is lymphatic massage recommended after liposuction?

Lymphatic drainage massage can be highly beneficial after liposuction, helping to reduce swelling and improve contour results. Dr. Graw can recommend when to begin and refer you to a qualified therapist as part of your recovery plan.

How long will swelling last?

Initial swelling typically subsides significantly within the first 4–6 weeks, but residual swelling can persist for up to 3–6 months before your final contour is fully visible. Wearing your compression garment as directed and staying hydrated will support a smoother, faster resolution.

Will I have visible scars, and how do I care for them?

Scarring is a natural part of the healing process, but Dr. Graw places incisions strategically to keep them as discreet as possible. Once your incisions are fully healed, she may recommend scar treatment products or silicone sheeting to support optimal fading.

Can I travel by plane during my recovery?

Air travel is generally not recommended for at least 2–4 weeks following surgery due to the increased risk of blood clots associated with prolonged sitting. When you are cleared to travel, staying well-hydrated and moving regularly during your flight is strongly encouraged.
